Slumped against the table, smile fixed, Carter secretly wished he could pull out his cell and play Minecraft. The junior class representative was putting them to sleep with a long diatribe on the yearbook photobomb competition. Looking askance at his vice president, Brianna, he winked. She wrote This statement is false on a note and slid it to him.

He barely stifled a laugh. The rep had only been elected because he’d run unopposed, because how could anyone oppose a robot? It was fact that only paradoxes could shut them up, and Carter knew that most of his peers thought paradox meant a couple of doctors. So there he was, the long-winded protocol droid, droning on in a nasal tone. Maybe if he used Brianna’s line aloud, Carter could short-circuit the kid’s brain and cause it to grind into silence.

“If I can interrupt, since we’re so close to the end of the period—” Carter held up a hand. “What I hear you saying . . . since your presentation was so . . . detailed . . . is that you want people to join clubs because they’re motivated; however, last year, the third-semester club enrollments were up by almost a quarter. Some of the larger clubs managed to have more fundraisers for activities, because even though people joined for the club photo, they got to like the group. Why don’t we solve the problem this way: let’s ask the clubs and yearbook to hold off on their photos until closer to the end of the year. Maybe by then, the people who joined to participate in the contest will get bored and drop.”

This seemed to make everyone happy. Carter sealed the mood with a grin. “Besides, I’m a shoo-in to win the award. Wouldn’t want to help anyone else out.”

Carter asked for any more business. Heads shook in desperation. All in all, it had been a successful first meeting of his student council. Priah Sangupta stretched out backward over the table as the class reps filed out and released a tremendous yawn that sounded more like a howl.

“I didn’t sign up to be treasurer so that I could listen to children bicker about nonsense!”

Carter chuckled at her upside-down head and her crisp accent. “What? You didn’t find the concerns over the painting of the cafeteria with low V-O-C paint to be stimulating?”

She stared. “No, Carter, I did not.”

“Better than watching it dry.”

Brianna tipped over him as if she were melting. “I hate you for talking me into being your running mate. Is this all we’re supposed to do, all year? I swear, I thought they were kidding when they told us it was boring.”

He remembered the look on the face of the previous council president, who announced their victory and then immediately mocked them for being so naively ambitious.

“Count yourself lucky. You get a free period, and all you have to do is look busy.” As he said it, he could picture Layla shaking her head at him in dismay. “If you’re bored, we could brainstorm a way to stay busy.
